Applications are open for the University of Malta Scholarship for the 2024 academic year. The University of Malta Scholarship Programmes offer tuition fee waivers of 40 to 100 percent awarded to the most deserving students outside the European Union/EEA. The University of Malta seeks to attract top-quality students from countries outside the European Union/EEA for whom the University’s Master and Ph.D. programmes may be beyond their financial reach.
Benefits of 2024 University of Malta Scholarship Programme
- Tuition fee waivers of up to 100 percent shall be awarded to deserving students.Â
- The fee waiver will apply for the normal duration of the programme being followed.
Note: If extensions of the period of study are required, these may not necessarily be eligible for a fee waiver.

Who is eligible to apply?
Only applicants who have been accepted unconditionally to read for a Master by research or a Ph.D. on a full-time and part-time basis are eligible to apply.
The UM Ph.D. and Master (by Research) Degree Scholarship Award Criteria approved by Senate are as follows:
- Academic ability of the applicant and the quality of the research proposal (60%):
Academic ability: academic track record; evidence of academic excellence and rigour; publications; strong academic reference (if available); ability of the candidate to undertake the proposed research and bring it to a successful completion
Research proposal quality: validity of the hypothesis; relevance of research; relevance and currency of any citations and references
- The quality of the motivational letter (10%):
quality of language and syntax; connection of research proposal to candidate’s current or intended occupation and career demonstration of knowledge about and commitment and passion for research topic
- Performance during the interview (10%)
clarity of communication in the English language; ability to follow and answer questions; suitability of temperament and evidence that candidate will be able to proceed along the designated research plan
- Candidate’s personal circumstances and financial need (10%)
taking into account the stage in the career of the candidate, other means of support and the possibility to undertake the programme of studies without the scholarship.Â
- Contribution to the UM and to Malta as a result of the research being undertaken (10%).

University of Malta Scholarship Application Process
To apply for the 2024/2025 University of Malta Scholarship Masters Programmes, Students are to submit a request to be considered for a fee waiver by sending an email to the International Office indicating the UM Applicant ID (student number) as shown in the letter of acceptance and ‘University of Malta Postgraduate Scholarship Application’ in the subject line.
The following documents should be attached to the application email:
- Copy of the Acceptance Letter
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae, and
- A motivational letter, and
- Copy of Passport (details page)
For each candidate, the International Office will request an Academic Recommendation Form from the Head of Department, Supervisor or Director of the academic area concerned. This document seeks to provide insight to the academic aspects of the research.
Candidates that meet the necessary eligibility requirements will be invited to attend an online interview with the Ph.D. and Masters (by research) Degree Scholarship Selection Board. Â
