Call for Papers: Technology and Society in Africa Conference: Current Prospects and Future Challenges

The overall subject

The emergence of the so-called fourth industrial revolution (4IR) has a bearing on social, economic, political, cultural, and modes of being human. This creates a need to discuss the relationship between technology and societal processes, specifically, the impact of technological innovations on societal institutions, and vice versa. Society and technology are symbiotically related and co-constitutive. In a world overwhelmed by enabling and disruptive digital systems, the question is how are societal and human developments impacted by these, and how do these spur the evolution of technology in turn?

To this end, the hosts convene the conference to offer researchers and students an opportunity to discuss the intersections between technology and society in an African context in various thematic areas and enrich an appreciation of possible directions of this development.

Submissions

350 words abstracts for papers, creative outputs, posters and presentations for individuals or groups are invited on such themes as:

• Big data and digital divide
• Social dimensions of artificial intelligence
• Technology and infrastructure
• New technologies and disruption
• Power, and new technologies
• Geopolitics of digital transformations
• The economy and digital transformations including labour
• Narratives, concepts, and new technologies
• Ethical implications of new technologies
• Technology, land and identity
• Technology and intellectual property rights
• Digital innovation in education
• Innovations on health and well-being including biomedical engineering
• Cultural implications
