About the scholarship
We are seeking a full-time, highly motivated PhD candidate to perform cutting-edge research in the psychology of emotional learning. The successful candidate will be working under the direct supervision of Professor Ottmar Lipp in the School of Psychology and Counselling. During the course of their PhD, the candidate will drive a research project that extends current knowledge about the extinction of human fear learning or in a related area. It is expected that the new basic knowledge generated will contribute to high-quality publications. Travel to national and international conferences will be available to the successful candidate.
About the project: Human Emotional Learning
There is currently broad agreement that likes and dislikes, including strong emotional responses such as fear and anxiety, are acquired through associative learning. However, little is known about the manner in which different forms of emotional learning interact or about how emotional learning once acquired can be modified, reduced or eliminated. In particular in the context of fear learning this is problematic as fear memories once acquired seem difficult to change and likely to return even after successful extinction – a phenomenon known as relapse. Hence there is a need to explore new ways in which we can strengthen extinction learning in order to reduce relapse.
The PhD project will seated within the wider context of a grant funded project. The details of the PhD project will be negotiated with the successful applicant. It will involve a series of laboratory based experiments that in all likelihood will require the recording of physiological responses, including, but not limited to, electrodermal responses and blink startle modulation and of self report and behavioural data.
