Doctoral research (PhD) programmes
Doctoral research programmes are postgraduate university programmes providing specialised training to those who wish to undertake advanced research.
The academic pathway includes the definition and development of a research project – through advanced teaching programmes and individual in-depth studies, in many cases also involving cultural exchanges with other Countries – and results in the production of a thesis based on original experimental work.
Duration
These are 3 or 4 year programmes. Attendance is mandatory.
Admission requirements
To be admitted to a doctoral programme applicants must:
- hold a Master’s degree or a suitable equivalent foreign qualification (or a Diploma for those who graduated before Ministerial Decree 509/99 entered into force);
- pass the admission tests, as indicated in the calls for application published annually by the University;
Qualification awarded an employment prospects
The Doctoral degree is awarded on passing the final exam, during which students defend their doctoral thesis. The degree allows access to the world of scientific research, mainly in the academic world but also in independent research centres and production facilities.
Doctoral scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to PhD students based on their position in the general ranking lists. In cases of equal merit, scholarships are assigned on the basis of the candidate’s economic situation. Doctoral places not covered by a scholarship are awarded to the youngest candidate. Â
Doctoral scholarships cannot be awarded to students who have already obtained a PhD, with or without scholarship.
The University decides on the amount of the study scholarship. Scholarships have a yearly duration and are renewed as long as the doctoral student is admitted into the following year.
The PhD in Economic Sociology and Labour Studies aims to produce students with a high level of expertise in different disciplines, essential for the study and regulation of economic and labour phenomena. Training has a strong interdisciplinary approach, in which the central role of economic sociology is supplemented with aspects of labour law, with economic-statistical and organizational-corporate disciplines, as well as with behavioural sciences.
These inter- and multi-disciplinary skills are necessary to be able to take an innovative approach when dealing with the role of social and institutional factors in the analysis and regulation of economic and labour phenomena in a complex and rapidly changing society.
In addition to imparting theoretical and substantive knowledge about the topics dealt with in the PhD, the training programme aims to provide strong methodological and empirical research skills, both quantitative and qualitative, in order to keep abreast of the recent progress being made in international social and economic science, including non-standard sociological analysis techniques such as computer experiments and simulations (agent-based modelling).
In order to apply for a place in the doctoral research programmes, students must have a second cycle degree, an equivalent qualification, or an equivalent qualification by study level (Master’s Degree) from a foreign University.
The suitability of the foreign academic qualifications in terms of content is appraised by the Examining Committee of each doctoral programme, in compliance with the regulations in force in Italy and in the country in which the academic qualification was issued, and the international treaties or agreements pertaining to the conferment of qualifications for the continuation of studies. Those without a second cycle degree may also apply, but admission to the doctoral research programme is subject to completing the second cycle degree by 31 October 2021, failing which they will be excluded from the programme.Â
